What is Googlebot?

Googlebot is the web crawler used by Google to discover and index pages on the internet. Its primary purpose is to systematically browse websites so that Google can include them in its search engine results. By following links and reading the content of web pages, Googlebot collects information about each page, including text, images, metadata, and other elements, which helps Google understand what the page is about and determine how it should rank in search results.

In addition to indexing public web content, Googlebot is also used for testing site performance and verifying structured data, mobile usability, and page speed. Because Googlebot represents one of the largest and most important search engine crawlers, website owners often monitor its activity to ensure their content is being correctly indexed. Traffic from Googlebot is legitimate, but it can appear in server logs just like other automated bots, and it’s important to distinguish it from malicious scrapers or spam crawlers.
